Skin not Skinning?
3 Reasons Your Skincare Routine isn't Working
Listen to your skin, identify your specific needs and goals.
My skin is not skinning! It’s been a week, one month, 86 days and that skincare product you purchased still isn’t working. You’re staring in the mirror and you’re not seeing results. Why is my skincare routine not working? Help!
You're using expired products
Just like food, skincare products have an expiration date. The thing with skincare is that it doesn't go off visually which means it does not grow mould, or go soggy or floppy. Sometimes the actives go off silently. Some ingredients can become less effective if exposed to excessive heat, light, or humidity. Store your skincare products in cool, dry places. To avoid wasting money on expired products, make it a habit to regularly check the expiration dates of your skincare items and replace them as needed. Also take note of the PAO (Period After Opening) of your products.
Hormonal changes
Hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact the health and appearance of your skin. Changes in hormone levels can lead to increased oiliness, acne breakouts, or dryness. Factors such as age, lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions can influence hormonal balance and, consequently, your skin’s condition. Making a conscious decision to modify your lifestyle by incorporating regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, managing stress levels, and getting enough sleep can help regulate hormones and promote overall skin health.
Your skin has adapted
The skin can become accustomed to products you use in your routine and over time, your skin can develop a tolerance to certain ingredients, leading to diminishing results. To combat skincare adaptation, consider introducing new products into your routine or rotating existing ones to keep your skin responsive. Experiment with different formulations or brands that target your specific concerns. Additionally, incorporating professional treatments like chemical peels or microdermabrasion can provide a boost to your skincare routine and stimulate skin renewal.
Prioritise basic, foundational skincare steps like cleansing, moisturising and sunscreen for a strong skin barrier and better results before adding more active products like Retinoids, AHAs/BHAs and depigmenting serums.
The goal is to not put your skin into shock. According to research, it may take anywhere from 6- 20 weeks to really see a change in skin. Of course, the time depends on the ingredients and what kinds of changes you’re looking for.
Finally, manage your expectations realistically and embrace the process of learning and getting to know your skin and improving overall skin health and longevity.
