Hydration vs Moisture: What Does My Skin Need?

Hydration vs Moisture: What Does My Skin Need?

Moisturisers form a barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and making it softer. Hydrators absorb moisture from the air or skin to keep it trapped. Both do similar jobs but have different effects. Though the words "moisturiser" and "hydrator" are often used interchangeably, a simple way to differentiate these terms is to remember that hydration refers to water, while moisture refers to oil.

Hydration simply has to do with the water content within the skin cells. It's essential for maintaining plumpness, elasticity and overall skin health. Hydrated skin cells are plump and supple, and this means skin is plump and supple too. Dehydrated skin cells sort of shrink up, causing the skin to look deflated and lifeless. Hydrating the skin basically means replenishing the the skin's water content, often through the use of hydrating serums, toners or moisturisers containing humectant ingredients like hydraulic acid and glycerin.

A Minimalist Routine to Keep Your Skin Healthy and Hydrated

Moisturising on the other hand, focuses on sealing in the skin's natural moisture and preventing water loss from the skin. This step in your skincare routine is particularly important for persons with dry or sensitive skin, as well as those living in dry climates. Moisturisng is the second half of the one-two punch that keeps skin looking healthy and feeling fabulous. A moisturiser creates a barrier on top of the skin, sealing in all of that hydration and preventing it from disappearing. Look for moisturisers with ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides and oils like jojoba or argan.

Tips For hydrating VS Moisturising Your Skin

A lot of skin hydration comes down to drinking enough water. This probably comes as no surprise! This helps your body maintain optimal hydration levels from inside out.
Another effective way to boost hydration is using skincare products with humectants which attract water and draw it into skin cells. Ingredients like aloe vera, honey and hydraulic acid, contain humectant properties that keep skin feeling soft and hydrated.
To moisturise skin, go for products with emollient ingredients as they help reduce water loss and make the skin feel soft and smooth. It’s important to recognise that they work very differently because what you choose can impact the state of your skin. The end goal might be the same — better hydrated skin — but the game plan to get there depends on your skin specifics.
